Song selection for the new album

Writing and the subsequent whittling down the tracks for a new Toshk album has begun. If you should see Steve driving around town there’s a fair chance you’ll catch a blast of the demos for the new album as he tries to refine the lyrics and arrangements. A dozen or so instrumentals written over the past 18 months have now been revised, reinvigorated and recorded. Words have been added and a public unveiling is in the offing. In addition some old Toshk tracks have been dusted down and polished up and will be released either here or through one of our many online outlets. The first came out on the 13th: Bouncebackability, backed with Bad Wolf and Bubble are now available on Itunes, Napster, Amazon, Rapsody and Spotify. Tell your friends and help make us some readies.

Steve and his co-horts are now working hard on new material for a side project which should manifest over the next couple of months. They’ve written several new songs which are sounding very impressive. Steve is still keen to pursue the Toshk project as its very different from that being produced with his co-conspirator the Right Hon. Jonny Fogg.

I’ve always tried to avoid writing anything too personal in my songs but this one is different. A romantic ode to my other half in which I explain the extent of my feelings for her. “I love you more than football, Star Wars or Sausages.” I doesn’t get much more romantic than that.

One of my favourite songs to write. Written in about five minutes – sometimes the tracks just seem to flow. Not typical Toshk but one I’m fond off. Demoed for the Might Never Happen album – this version is raw in places but captures what was set out to achieve.

From the Rooney EP. This was written at the end of England’s European Championship match against Portugal (after about 3 and half litres of diet coke round at Dean and Trudi’s – on a real caffiene high) and was previously subtitled “what a pain in the Urs”. We now however accept that there was no conspiracy by UEFA and Urs Meier (the referee) to guarantee Portugal – the tournament hosts – a place in the semi-finals and that it was purely sour grapes on behalf of the millions and millions who saw a perfectly good goal disallowed for England. Bring it (back home to England)

Written for England’s 2006 Summer Football campaign, the title track pays homage to some of the great and not so great football anthems but with a typical Toshk twist. Packed with footy cliches and an unapologetic eighties pop vibe The song was deliberately not specific about 2006 and made references to several other England Anthems over the years… and if you listen carefully you can spot several homages to some real English/British institutions in there too.
